„So good to be back home again” – Al Green had it spot on in arguably the most tender and loving hommage ever to very probably the greatest club in the world. (Check out the lyrics – you’ll see.)
You know when there’s been a heatwave and you’re so grateful for the first somewhat cooler day for what seems like an age?
That’s what it’s like to be a Borussia Mönchengladbach aficionado at the moment. After two to three years too close to the heat, everyone seems relieved to be back where we belong, with a modest and sensible coach and manager promising a return to what it means to be the club from the Lower Rhine. And, of course, it’s so good to be back with you again, dear listeners.
The contents of our latest humble (yet brilliant) offering: the Bundesliga matches against Hoffenheim and Schalke, the first round in the national cup, the new players (especially the very promising debut by Ko Itakura), the new-old Borussia spirit once again informing our team, developments in tactics and formation, and a look forward to the home match against Hertha BSC Berlin.
The legendary goal is Raffael’s belter against Hertha in Berlin in 2017. Otherwise worshipped for his delicate, thoughtful and breathtaking dribbling, with which he seemed to caress the ball into goal, football god Raffael proved he could also score by thumping the ball really, really hard from very far away, too.

Manuel and Alexis analyse Borussia Mönchengladbach’s performances in the month of March, a true mensis horribilis. Does the win against Schalke 04 mean light at the end of the tunnel? Can Marco Rose go on? There has definitely been a shift in opinion regarding our future ex-manager succumbing to the Forces of Evil. In our Legendary Goals section, a tribute to one of Borussia’s greats, Lothar Matthäus, a player who always gave everything for his team and recently celebrated his 60th birthday.
For this podcast’s title, it’s back to literature for the quote.

Another 4 goals against Schachtar reinforce the lead in the CL group stage. However, Bundesliga performace needs to improve. Alexis and your host Manuel talk you through the recent games and give an outlook to the match against Schalke 04.

Two wins, a draw and two defeats – a pretty average April sees Gladbach on tenth position in the League. But with four games to go, the Europa League is still only a couple of points away. Still, the debut of Laszlo Benes and the derby-win over Cologne were highlights. Manuel talks you through the matches and provides an overview over the team’s current status.

After several great wins, the Foals train came to a stand-still, losing 1-2 to Hamburg and 0-1 at home to top-of-the-league Bayern Munich. In between more disappointment, as Borussia crashed out of the Europa League against Schalke. A 2-2 draw at home saw Gladbach being eliminated on away goals after the 1-1 at Schalke. A tough Saturday night ‘Spitzenspiel’ lies now ahead of the team of Dieter Hecking. Manuel talks you through the matches.

Borussia is climbing up the League table, with another three victories against Werder, Ingolstadt and Schalke, only losing narrowly to RB Leipzig. In the Cup competitions it has been equally successful, with Lars Stindl giving the club a magic European night after a comeback against Fiorentina. The Foals were 0-3 down on aggregate, only to score four goals in 16 minutes and a Stindl-hattrick. To round up a great month, Hamburg has been beaten 2-1 in the DFB-Cup quarter-finals. Borussia now faces Frankfurt at home in the semi-final of the competition. Manuel talks you through the games and gives a quick assessment of the key points to manager Dieter Hecking’s success.

A fantastic atmosphere in Mönchengladbach, Borussia hosted Barcelona in the Champions League group matchday 2. The foals went 1-0 through a Hazard-goal, but Barca turned it around with two goals in the second half. A great effort from André Schuberts team nonetheless. Only a few days later, it was yet another weak performance away from Borussia-Park, when Gladbach helped Schalke to their first points of the season in a 4-0-thrashing. A soft penalty and two more goals conceded within six minutes decided the game, just when Gladbach had made efforts to score and aim for only the second away win in 14 games (with only four draws). Manuel talks you through both games.

From Ingolstadt to Barcelona and back to Bundesliga – different flavours of football for the Foals these days. The squad of Manager André Schubert, whose contract has been extended until 2019 this week, mastered the difficult tasks against RB Leipizig (1:1) and Ingolstadt (2:0) well; now, they’re hosting none other than FC Barcelona at Borussia-Park. Truly a highlight for the club’s recent history, no matter the outcome. On Sunday, Schalke 04, with nil points after five Bundesliga matches, hosts Gladbach to matchday six in the League, before the League hits the break as another National squad weekend is scheduled.

A dominant Borussia is held 2-1 by Schalke at Veltins Arena, in a match that some pundits afterwards described as “slapstick”. 22 shots on target, some clear-cut chances missed or denied by Schalke’s outstanding keeper Ralf Fährmann, and Schalke bags two goals through an own goal by Martin Hinteregger and a deflected shot off Granit Xhaka’s shoulder. Unbelievable. The team must not let their heads down, however, as this was still a very stong team performance, completely outplaying one of the biggest clubs in the League on their own ground. After the Easter Bundesliga break, it’s another big match for Europe when high-flying Hertha Berlin is coming to Borussia-Park on Sunday.
